Questions
Frequently Asked
What is the difference between Cosmelan and Dermamelan?
Both are professional depigmentation treatments that target pigmentation such as melasma, sun spots and post-inflammatory marks, and they share a similar active approach. Dermamelan is the more intensive, medical version aimed at deeper or more stubborn pigmentation, while Cosmelan is a slightly gentler option, and at your consultation we will advise which suits your skin best.
How much does Cosmelan or Dermamelan cost?
Prices start from £950 at our Mayfair clinic, with your exact cost confirmed at your consultation. The price reflects the in-clinic mask application and your take-home care, which we will explain fully before you begin.
How long does it take to see results?
Many people notice their skin looking clearer within the first couple of weeks as the initial peeling settles, with more even tone typically developing over the weeks that follow. Individual results vary, so we will set realistic expectations for your skin at your consultation.
How does the treatment work?
A depigmentation mask is applied in clinic and left on for a set number of hours before you remove it at home, followed by a structured programme of prescribed home products. This works to reduce excess melanin and encourage a more even, radiant tone over the following months.
Does Cosmelan or Dermamelan hurt?
Most people find the mask comfortable, though it is common to feel some warmth, tingling or a mild burning sensation in the first few days after application. These sensations are usually temporary, and we give you clear aftercare guidance to keep you comfortable.
What are the side effects and downtime?
It is normal to experience redness, peeling, tightness and sensitivity in the first several days as the skin renews, and this generally settles within a week or so. We will talk you through what to expect and how to care for your skin throughout the process.
How long do the results last?
With diligent home care and daily SPF, many people enjoy their results for many months and sometimes longer. Pigmentation can return with sun exposure or hormonal changes, so ongoing maintenance and sun protection are important, and we will guide you on this.
Is Cosmelan or Dermamelan suitable for melasma?
These treatments are often chosen for melasma as well as other forms of hyperpigmentation, and they can be suitable for a range of skin tones. Melasma can be persistent, so we assess your skin and history carefully at your consultation to see if it is right for you.
What aftercare is involved?
Aftercare is a key part of the results and involves a prescribed regime of home products, gentle cleansing, regular moisturising and strict daily sun protection. We provide detailed instructions and support you throughout your programme at our Mayfair clinic.
Can I have this treatment in the summer?
The treatment can be carried out year round, but because sun exposure strongly affects pigmentation, diligent SPF and sun avoidance are essential during and after the programme. We will discuss the best timing for your lifestyle at your consultation.
